FIBROSCAN TESTING FOR LIVER CONDITIONS
About FibroScan
Our office now offers the FIbroScan liver scan. A quick and easy scanning tool to evaluate and manage your liver health.
A FibroScan (liver elastography) is a non-invasive, 10–15 minute ultrasound-like test that measures liver health by measuring liver scarring (fibrosis) and fat accumulation (steatosis). It provides immediate data on the stiffness and fatty changes of the liver, helping doctors diagnose or monitor conditions like cirrhosis, NAFLD, and hepatitis without a
biopsy.
This easy and painless screening tool helps early detection and management of liver disease.
About Liver Diseases
Liver Fibrosis: Liver fibrosis is the accumulation of tough, fibrous scar tissue (collagen) in the liver, replacing healthy cells due to chronic injury, such as hepatitis, alcohol abuse, or fat buildup (steatosis). This scarring damages liver function, disrupts blood flow, and can lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer if untreated.
Steatosis: Steatosis, commonly known as fatty liver disease, is the accumulation of excess fat (typically 5%–10% or more of liver weight) within liver cells. It is often caused by alcohol misuse (ALD) or metabolic conditions like obesity and type 2 diabetes (MASLD). While often asymptomatic in early stages, it can cause fatigue or abdominal discomfort.
Cirrosis: Cirrhosis is the late-stage, often irreversible scarring (fibrosis) of the liver caused by long-term liver diseases and conditions, such as hepatitis or chronic alcoholism. This permanent damage replaces healthy tissue, preventing the liver from filtering blood, processing nutrients, and fighting infections, which can lead to life-threatening liver failure.
NAFLD: Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is a condition characterized by excess fat storage in liver cells not caused by heavy alcohol use, often linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. It is frequently termed a “silent” disease with no early symptoms, which can progress to inflammation (NASH), fibrosis, and cirrhosis.
Hepatitis: Hepatitis is the inflammation of the liver, often caused by viruses (A, B, C, D, E), alcohol abuse, toxins, or
immune system issues. It can be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term), leading to fibrosis (scarring), cirrhosis, or liver cancer. Common symptoms include jaundice, fatigue, and abdominal pain.
Damage to the liver can be reversed through early diagnosis and intervention. Management includes focusing on
improved wellness in areas such as heart health, obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure. Following a wellness plan can reduce your risk of advanced liver disease.

What to Expect
Please do not eat or drink for the 3 hours before your appointment. Doing so could result in inaccurate data.
This process is quick, easy, and painless. The patient lies on their back while the technician gently presses the FibroScan probe to the skin. Once the test is complete, your provider will analyze the results and give you the results of your liver scan.
